Sweden dreams for Japanese as they target last four place
Japan continued to impress at the 2023 World Cup as they cruised past Norway in the last round. Having topped their group in style, The Nadeshiko continued their front foot philosophy. Despite being pegged back to 1-1 after a ferocious start to the game they ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.
Sweden earned their place in the last eight the hard way. A fairly uninspiring goalless contest went all the way to penalties with the Scandanavians edging the shootout 5-4.
Once the dust has settled the game will be most known for featuring retiring USA superstar Megan Rapinoe’s last kick. Unfortunately for her it was the missed penalty which sealed the Swede’s victory.
Japan were electric in their last game as they have been throughout the tournament. Futoshi Ikeda has impressed with his tactics and time management of his squad, rotating and resting perfectly. His side’s electric counter attacks have been a constant feature and have been ruthless.

Miyazawa to star once again
Japan’s round of 16 fixture against Norway saw us correctly have Hinata Miyazawa to get on the scoresheet as one of our predictions. That was her fifth goal of the tournament and keeps her at the top of the race for the Golden Boot.
The 23-year-old was a constant menace to the Norway defence with her skillful touches but even more so because of her electric pace. The Japanese counter attacking style is made for the Mynavi Sendai star with her bursting, well timed runs and clinical finishing becoming a common sight.
Her selflessness has seen her create several chances for her teammates but it is her goal scoring which we are looking for here. She is a standout pick with her odds to score even bigger than they were for the Sweden game.

Forwards on top at Eden Park
In the group stages, Japan scored 11 unanswered goals in defeating Spain, Zambia, and Costa Rica. So it was something of a surprise when star goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita was finally beaten.
The Nadeshiko have scored in every match they have played in the tournament so far and have now racked up an impressive 14 goals. Such is the ease they are cutting through teams I can’t see them being kept off the scoresheet by Peter Gerhardsson’s side.
For their part Sweden scored in each of their three group games but drew a blank against USA. The longer the game went on the less it seemed likely there would be a breakthrough.
I expect Japan to come out of the blocks at blistering pace once again in Auckland and as a result grab an early goal to open up the tie. We have seen the danger the Swedes possess from set pieces and aerially. Especially Amanda Ilestedt who has three headed goals to her name this tournament.
Sweden will take encouragement from the fact Norway scored their goal via a powerful header into the top corner by Guro Reiten from an inch perfect Vilde Risa cross. Given the nature of knockout competition the play here is for both teams to get on the scoresheet.
