- Davido lights up event as Haaland wins Players’ gong
New Ajax man, Chuba Akpom, has been named the Championship Players’ Player of the Year following his excellent campaign with Middlesbrough last season, just as Nigerian singer, Davido lit up the event with his performance, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Super Eagles-eligible striker thrived under the management of Michael Carrick to lead the second-tier goal chart with 28 goals in just 40 appearances last term.
He beat off competition from fellow player of Nigerian descent and new Bayern Leverkusen signing, Nathan Tella, who scored 17 goals, including two hat-tricks while on loan at Burley and helped the Clarets in their run to the title and the Premier League return.
Other players in the category were Burnley’s Josh Brownhill, Sheffield United’s Iliman Ndiaye, Luton’s Carlton Morris and Coventry City’s Viktor Gyokeres.
England international of Nigerian descent, Bukayo Saka also won the Young Player of the Year award for his stellar performance with Arsenal last season.
Davido’s performance came as an interlude before the biggest awards of the night were announced.
Meanwhile, Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland, won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, beating off competition from teammates Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones as well as Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane and Martin Odegaard.
The Norwegian had an incredible first season in England, finding the net 36 times last season in just 35 appearances to help Manchester City win a third consecutive EPL title.
