The PUNCH reports that this followed consistent complaints on social media by Nigerian residents in both states, in recent times.
In a late Friday night tweet, Adejobi said, “Yes. The IGP has warned all personnel in Rivers and Imo States and across board to be careful and turn a new leaf as the present leadership won’t tolerate inappropriate and unprofessional conduct. The IGP has reiterated that he doesn’t need any gift or ‘envelope’ from any officer.
“So nobody should use or drop IGP’s name to extort at any level or in any corner. No way. Nigerians should know that it’s a big lie whenever anyone mentions IGP’s name in any corruption case or extortion. He has zero tolerance for extortion and corruption,”
While sharing pictures and a video update in a preceding tweet, Adejobi revealed, “Can you still remember this video? The men from Rivers State Command were brought to the office of the IGP today for an interview. They were led by their commander. Frame 4: The men were watching the video of their misconduct. The IGP has referred the matter for necessary action. This reiterates our commitment to sanitising the police and having our people-friendly NPF. Thanks for your support always.”
The PUNCH had reported that the NPF on Monday, said it has arrested four police officers for allegedly assaulting a woman in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. On Friday, a video appeared on X (formerly known as Twitter), wherein a woman who was said to be travelling, was seen with bruises on her mouth.
In the less than one-minute video, the victim was seen washing off the bruise on her lips with a bottle of water while another woman could be heard shouting at some armed police officers along the road, accusing them of assaulting and inflicting injuries on her sister’s lips. The incident reportedly happened during a stop-and-search operation around the Ada George area of Port Harcourt.
The video elicited harsh reactions on social media as many Nigerians called for the arrest of the officers involved in the incident.
In a statement released on Monday, the NPF asked the lady seen in the video to come forward and share her side of the story.
“We want to inform our esteemed friends that the police officers allegedly involved in the incident from the video have been identified and are now in custody as part of our ongoing investigation.
“We are committed to ensuring a fair and thorough examination of this matter. However, to ensure transparency and gather all perspectives, we urgently request the lady seen in the video to please come forward and share her side of the story. Your input is crucial in helping us understand the situation fully. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities,” the statement read.
