The Chairman of The Ambassador Schools, Ota, Mr Samson Yomi Osewa, in this interview with The PUNCH, explains the vision and mission of the schools
Can you provide an overview of your school’s mission and vision for the upcoming school year?
Our vision and mission haven’t changed over the years, we remain committed to fostering the spiritual, physical and emotional development of every child. To do so, we will continue to provide solid functional literacy for students through the blending of biblical and moral principles plus value-added guidance and counselling with emphasis on qualitative co-curricular activities.
What new programs or initiatives is the school introducing for the upcoming academic year?
To provide our young ambassadors with a competitive advantage in the global academic arena, we have implemented the Cambridge Checkpoint Examination in our Primary Schools. This equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge for international examinations and admission to prestigious institutions worldwide. Additionally, we are introducing A’ level programs in our colleges, complementing the SAT and IGCSE programs that are already in place.
Can you highlight any changes or improvements in the school’s infrastructure and facilities?
Parents, teachers and even students can attest to the fact that there is always a project, renovation, and procurement going on at all our campuses and facilities every time. For this new session, all our classrooms have been equipped with the latest and state-of-the-art interactive boards to enhance
and augment learning experience. To the glory of God, we now have another and bigger sports complex for our senior college- well structured and equipped with a modern gym facility. Additionally, in response to the unreliable power supply, we are nearing completion of our ambitious mega-solar power project. This project is expected to provide sustainable energy for all The Ambassadors Schools’ campuses and facilities.
What are the school’s goals for academic achievement in the coming year, and how do you plan to support student success?
This session, we are breaking more boundaries and achieving even more milestones and this can’t be possible without a sound framework and inputs from relevant stakeholders which are readily in place. Part of our goals to support student success is enhancing personalised learning among our students. That way, we will get to know each student’s strengths, weaknesses and struggles, as well as help us know the appropriate approach to get them back on track or nurture them better.
How is the school addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion in both its curriculum and student body?
Addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in both the curriculum and the student body is crucial for creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment. As a Christian school, our doors are open to everyone.
Regardless of the demographics or gender, we are one big family, there’s no room for discrimination or disparity of any kind here. We have students and pupils from across the country; even from North America and Europe and they can attest that The Ambassadors Schools, Ota provides a welcoming and safe haven for all.
Can you discuss any extracurricular activities or clubs that students can look forward to this year?
Over the years, we’ve been known to be at the frontline of academic achievements, In this session we are showcasing our prowess in sports and extracurricular activities.
What measures are in place to ensure the mental and emotional well-being of students and staff?
Part of our vision is to foster the emotional development of every child here. We have well-seasoned counsellors and therapists on ground to help attend to our esteemed ambassadors’ mental and emotional well-being. Additionally, we organise regular workshops and seminars on stress management, mindfulness, and emotional resilience. Our members of staff also undergo well-being training, fostering a supportive environment for everyone.
How does the school plan to involve parents in their child’s education and keep them informed about their progress?
We believe in a strong partnership between parents, students, and the school. At The Ambassadors Schools, Ota, we conduct regular parent-teacher meetings where we discuss students’ progress, strengths, and areas for improvement. We also have a user-friendly online portal where parents can access real-time updates on their child’s academic performance, assignments, and attendance. We encourage open communication and actively seek parent feedback through surveys and meetings.
What technology resources and tools will be available to students to support their learning?
Technology plays a vital role in education today and we are leveraging its numerous benefits to enhance learning experience. Here, we provide students with access to cutting-edge technology resources, including ICT and STEM labs, digital libraries, and interactive learning platforms. We recently bought over 100 interactive boards distributed across our campuses to aid the learning experience of our ambassadors. Not only that, our teachers are trained to integrate technology into their lessons to enhance the learning experience.
What steps has the school taken to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for students, including addressing issues like bullying and harassment?
Ensuring a safe and nurturing environment is a top priority. We have a strict anti-bullying policy in place, along with some dedicated counsellors who address any concerns promptly and confidentially. We also conduct awareness campaigns and workshops to educate students about respect, tolerance, and empathy. Our members of staff are trained in conflict resolution and creating a positive atmosphere, ensuring that students feel secure and supported.
How does the school plan to celebrate student achievements and milestones throughout the year?
Recognizing and celebrating student achievements is essential. Throughout the year, we have various events such as award ceremonies, talent shows, and academic competitions. These events showcase students’ talents and accomplishments. We also publish a monthly newsletter in addition to our social media posts highlighting student achievements and milestones, ensuring that their hard work is acknowledged and celebrated by the entire school community.
Lastly, what advice do you have for students, parents, and teachers as they embark on a new school year?
We are still in the business of shaping destiny and future through qualitative education. As we begin a new school year, my advice is to embrace every opportunity for growth and learning. For students, set clear goals, manage your time wisely, and seek help when needed. For parents, stay actively engaged in your child’s education, communicate openly with teachers, and encourage a love for learning. For teachers, foster a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment, inspire curiosity, and adapt to the evolving needs of your students.
Together, we can make this school year a remarkable journey of education and personal development.
