Residents of Ogijo in the Sagamu Local Government Area, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun states, are currently excited as electricity supply was restored to the community following a report by PUNCH Metro on April 7, 2023.
It was gathered that electricity was restored in the first week of September 2023 after the Seidu 1 and Seidu 2 communities of Ogijo were disconnected in February 2022.
PUNCH Metro had reported that the blackout forced some residents, especially artisans, who need electricity for their work, to relocate from the area.
While those who had no choice but to remain in the community were spending a fortune on fuel to power their generating sets to carry out their commercial activities, others accepted their fate, urging the government to intervene.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, a resident simply identified as Pastor Julius, while commending the power distribution company for yielding to their cry and intervention, said businesses in the community were returning to their usual places after electricity was restored following PUNCH Report.
Julius said, “They restored our light last Thursday, although some places were yet to have theirs restored. I think electricity is being restored to the community one area at a time. We were told that the entire community would enjoy electricity after proper measures were put in place. They also said they wanted to know whether there would be a power surge or poor connection.
“If they restore light in one area today, light will be restored in another place later. That’s how they have been doing it since last Thursday. It started with Ita-Oluwo. Now, the majority of the communities have had their electricity restored.
“However, businesses have gone back to normal in most of the communities in the area. We applaud them for what they have done so far, but we beg them not to throw us into darkness again.”
Another resident, identified simply as Idowu said, “Electricity has been restored here. Although it is still unstable; it is better than a total blackout. It did not start on Thursday as you were told. I understand some other places had started enjoying light as far back as Monday.”
Recall that the Chairman of Ogo Irawo Community Development Association, Ogijo, Aliu Tiamiyu, told our correspondent that the community had to contribute after learning that a nearby substation at Odongunyan could help them to enjoy electricity supply like other communities.
However, an administrative hiccup between IBEDC and Ikeja Electricity Distribution was said to have delayed the implementation of the project, hence the PUNCH Report.
