This is coming after the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal declared the immediate-past Deputy Governor of the State, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the March 2023 governorship election in the state and nullifying election of the current state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
On Wednesday, the PUNCH reported that the state’s police command announced the strict enforcement of a 24-hour curfew, beginning from 6pm on Wednesday, 20th September 2023, to 6pm on Thursday, 21st September 2023 as part of measures to maintain law and order in the state.
A Punch reporter who monitored the situation on Thursday reports that following the curfew, human and vehicular movement have been restricted within the city.
Armed security personnel deployed to major streets and other strategic places were on ground to ensure total compliance as only vehicles conveying workers on special duties were being allowed to go to their respective places of work.
It was also observed that schools, marketplaces, and all other business premises including filling stations were also closed due to the 24-hour curfew.
The curfew had forced many residents to resort to eating any available food they can get as many people were caught unawares by the curfew in view of the time the announcement was made.
A cross-section of residents who spoke on the situation lamented the decision taken by the government to impose the curfew despite the current hardships being experienced by people amidst the current economic hardship.
One of the residents and a water vendor faulted the decision to impose the curfew because according to him, many people have to go out on a daily basis to work before they can get what they would feed themselves and their families.
“You see the curfew has forced people to remain indoors and most of the people nowadays have to go out and work before getting what to eat,” he said.
He expressed hope that the government would lift the curfew today so as not to inflict more on the people.
