Rayo to hand Pacheta first defeat as Villarreal boss
Both sides went into the recent international break following back to back La Liga defeats. Both then restarted their campaigns with victories at the weekend.
Rayo Vallecano posted an impressive 2-0 home win against Alavés which has seen them climb back up to 6th in the league table. Villarreal marked new manager Pacheta’s first game in charge with a come from behind success against rock-bottom Almeria. However, the Yellow Submarine needed two goals deep into added time of each half to come out on top.
Los Franjirrojos who won both head-to-head fixtures last season, have a fine recent home record and when looking at the odds that is what makes them the narrow favourite to emerge as the winner of this one. They have won five of their last seven at Estadio de Vallecas and have the added benefit of no European game ahead of this clash unlike their visitors.

Sørloth to stretch scoring streak
Having scored in both La Liga fixtures ahead of the international break, against Barcelona and the opener against Cadiz before leaving the field with an injury, it looked like Alexander Sørloth’s streak had come to an end. However in the fourth minute of stoppage time the Norwegian converted a dramatic last-gasp winner against Almeria.
The 27-year-old is locked in as his side’s focal point in attack and has formed a prolific partnership with Gerard Moreno who scored the equalising goal at the weekend. What’s more Sørloth showed no signs of the injury that forced him off after just 27 minutes against Cadiz prior to the international break.
Not only completing the full game but as mentioned being on the end of Alberto Moreno’s cross deep into stoppage time to earn his new manager three points in his first game in charge. Sørloth put up some decent stats for Real Sociedad last season and can continue his hot start for his new club here.

Valentín’s day to receive a card
There was a strange occurrence at the weekend when Rayo played Alavés. Vallecano’s Óscar Valentín failed to register a foul for the first time this season.
The 29-year-old signed a contract extension to keep him with the club until 2027 and completed a La Liga game for the fourth successive time to celebrate. However having amassed 4, 3, 3 and 5 fouls in the opening fixtures of the season he kept it clean at the weekend perhaps illustrating his side’s dominance over the visitors.
The defensive midfielder has only picked up a yellow card in the opening fixture this term against Almeria. However, having found his way into the referee’s notebook 11 times from 34 appearances last season coupled with his regular infringements another caution can’t be far away.
In what looks a tight combative match up I am completing my tips by adding Valentin to be carded as the final one of my predictions.
