Speaking with our correspondent on the campus of Fountain University, Osogbo, where the competitions are being held on Thursday, the Amir, Youth Wing of the society, Kabiru Raji, said one of the objectives behind the event was to tackle Islamic radicalism.
According to him, during the 6-day competitions, which began on Tuesday, the participants would engage in sporting events that include; football, volleyball, chess, and table tennis, among others.
He said, “Part of what we are doing with NASFAT games is also to use it to tackle Islamic radicalism. We have had so much trouble around Muslim communities because most of the Muslim youth do not see interest in sports.
“But we believe engaging them in sporting activities at the grassroots, especially at the far north where we have NASFAT branches in different sporting activities, will take them away from idleness.
“When you are not idle, you have the opportunity to grow, and you will shun social vices, including radicalism, which people are easily lured into due to idleness. With engagement in sporting activities, we believe we are able to tackle radicalism and restlessness among Muslim youths.”
