The Chairman, PWAN Champion, Dr. Michael Akhuetie, has appealed to the government at all levels to put the right policies in place to enable the real estate sector curb housing deficits in Nigeria, especially in Lagos.
Akhuetie spoke exclusively to The PUNCH after an anniversary/awards event organised by the company in Lagos to celebrate its success and reward performing workers tagged, ‘Champion Nite,’
He said with the right policies in place, regarding ease of getting certificates of occupancy, the real estate sector would be able to tackle the issue of housing deficits in the country.
He stated that it was most difficult to secure a C of O for a landed property in Lagos, while other states were more flexible.
According to him, “If the government will work with us, we can develop a number of places in the country, but because of the government’s policies, we might not be able to do anything.
“You might want to develop an area and the road is not tarred. As a real estate developer, you don’t have the right to tar the road without permission.”
He added, “If the approval is made flexible, it would help us. If it is flexible to get a C of O or get some needed documents concerning this, it will help us. Getting land from the community is not a problem, but getting C of O, is a major problem. This boils down to government policy.”
On the rising cases of building collapse in Lagos, he said tthe rising cases of building collapse was also a function of the government policies and lack of building monitoring system.
