The Executive Secretary, National Senior Secondary Education Commission, Dr Iyela Ajayi, said the act establishing the commission mandates that states contribute at least five per cent of counterpart funding to qualify for the intervention fund of the Federal Government.
He also noted that the establishment of Senior Secondary Schools Education Boards by state governments would go a long way in ensuring that the functions of the Commission were smoothly implemented.
A statement signed by the Head, Public Relations of the Commission, Fatima Bappare, and was made available to our correspondent on Thursday, said the Executive Secretary made these known during a courtesy call to the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akon Eyakenyi.
The statement by the Commission reads, “NSSEC has called upon Akwa Ibom State to change the nomenclature of State Secondary Education Board, to State Senior Secondary Education Board. Making the call while speaking to the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi in Uyo during a courtesy call, Dr Iyela explained that, Section 21, sub-section 2 of the NSSEC Act 2003, provides for states to comply by establishing Senior Secondary Education Board. The Act also directs States to contribute at least five per cent as the counterpart funding to qualify for the NSSEC intervention fund.
He appealed to Akwa Ibom State government to provide a furnished office for use as the Commission’s provisional office, as well as a land in Uyo for the Commission to erect its South-South zonal office.
Eyakenyi, expressed her State Government’s willingness to collaborate with the Commission. She disclosed that a land had already been earmarked for SSSEB in Uyo.
