Parts of the Federal Capital Territory and other Northern states on Wednesday experienced hazy weather as a result of observed dust haze which came into the country from neighbouring regions.
A public alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and signed by its General Manager of Public Affairs, Muntari Ibrahim, stated that the dust haze was expected to affect deterioration in visibility in Katsina, Kano, Nguru, Jigawa, Potiskum and Maiduguri amongst other northern states.
The statement added that the dust in suspension was expected to propagate to some states causing dust haze in the northern part of the country, which would further reduce horizontal visibility in the next 24 hours.
It stated, “Stations in the source region from Chad (Faya-Largeau, Bol-Berim, Mongo, Abeche and Ndjamena) have been reporting horizontal visibility between 800m and 4000m. Other sources from Niger that share a border with northern Nigeria (Diffa, Maine-Soroa, Goure, Bila, Maradi, Zinder and Birni-n- Konni) have been reporting dust haze in poor visibility between 1000m and 3000 m since the last 24 hours.
“Due to strong winds, the dust in suspension is expected to propagate to some states in the northern part of the country, which will further reduce horizontal visibility.”
It further advised individuals with respiratory ailments and airline operators to take necessary precautions.
It added, “NiMet therefore lets members of the public know to take necessary precautions because of dust particles currently in suspension over the atmosphere. Individuals with respiratory ailments are advised to protect themselves as the current weather condition is not suitable for their health.
“Airline operators are also advised to avail themselves of weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.”
In Abuja, the hazy weather was observed in most parts of the city as the suspension in the air of dust or small sand particles obscured the clear vision of drivers and residents, making breathing difficult.
When contacted for further information, Ibrahim said a press briefing was being arranged to brief the public on its findings and likely implications.
He said, “I can’t give any update now because I would have to contact the source station. However, a press briefing is being arranged to give more information on this issue.”
