A former Ogun State deputy governor, Senator Shefiu Kaka, has advised Nigerian youths to shun cultism by embracing moral values associated with their jobs.
Kaka, who was the Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Ogun State branch, stated this during the Sanyaolu Memorial Annual Lecture held in Abeokuta.
He described as timely and apt the theme of the lecture: “Combating the Twin Menaces of Youth Unemployment and Insecurity in Nigeria: The Roles of the Professional Elites.”
Speaking of the theme, Kaka said, “This was in tandem with trends ravaging the nation, urging young people to resist peer influences that usually lead them to vices and crime.
The President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Dr Matthew Ibitoye, said, “Poor governance, overdependence on Western education without learning business skills, and a lack of the establishment of companies by the government and stakeholders also contributed to the insecurity and youth unemployment in the country.”
A guest lecturer from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Prof. Taiwo Edun, said youth unemployment was becoming increasingly complex to manage, considering the number of graduates being churned out by the tertiary institutions.
