Hadid has been one of the vocal celebrities calling for calm on both sides of the war, since its inception.
On Sunday, Hadid condemned Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza strip, which houses mostly Palestinians in a post she shared on her Instagram handle.
“There is nothing Jewish about the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians,” the post read.
Reacting to the post, the Israeli government on its official Instagram handle fired back at the model with a series of posts condemning her remark.
“There is nothing valiant about Hamas’ massacre of Israelis. Condemning Hamas for what it is (ISIS) is not anti-Palestine and supporting Israelis in their fight against barbaric terrorists is the right thing to do.
“@gigihadid Have you been sleeping the past week? Or are you just fine turning a blind eye to Jewish babies being butchered in their homes? Your silence has been very clear about where you stand. We see you,” the posts read.
The page also posted the gory picture of a floor stained by the blood of a little child killed by the Hamas militants.
“If you don’t condemn this your words mean NOTHING,” the caption read.
In a statement shared earlier by Hadid, the model condemned the killing of “innocent civilians” on both sides of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The release read in part, “My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict too many of which are children. I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it’s a responsibility I hold daily. I also feel a responsibility to my Jewish friends to make it clear, as I have before: While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person.
“I know my words will never be enough or heal the deep wounds of so many, but I pray for the safety of innocent lives, always.”
Israel declared war on Hamas last Sunday, a day after members of the militant group broke through the country’s border to carry out a wave of deadly attacks. The Hamas group killed over 1,400 people, most of them civilians in the attacks.
After the declaration of war, the IDF has flattened several neighbourhoods in the Gaza Strip with consistent bombing which has continued for over a week. At least 2,670 people have died in the attacks, the majority of whom are civilian Palestinians.
