The pedestrian bridge at the 7-Up Bus Stop at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway currently poses threats to lives as the majority of the railings are missing, PUNCH Metro reports.
When one of our correspondents visited the bridge on Sunday, he noticed that many of the pedestrians were using the bridge with fear.
PUNCH Metro observed that while coming from the Ojodu Berger area inward Lagos, one would hardly see that the bridge is in a bad condition due to an advert banner that covered it.
However, the poor state of the bridge becomes obvious coming from Oworonshoki inward Berger.
Some pedestrians who spoke with our correspondent decried the condition of the bridge and called on the Lagos State Government to repair it.
A pedestrian, Ayomide Daniel, said, “I was passing by and I saw that some of the railings used to cover the bridge have been removed and they need to be replaced by the government. They should please help us so that this will not cause disaster. Someone can mistakenly slip onto the road from the bridge. The government should come here and see this and help us repair the bridge.”
Another pedestrian, Omolola Pelumi, described the present condition of the bridge as life-threatening.
“This bridge is very dangerous as it is. It is very bad and life-threatening. The government should do the needful. Some persons might have committed this act of removing the railings. As an adult, I am very careful, especially when I pass here with my kids. Children can be very playful. What if someone mistakenly slips off the bridge? 7up Bridge needs urgent attention,” she said.
Also, a tricyclist, Akeem Onabisi, decried the state of the bridge.
Onabisi said, “Whenever I get to the bridge, I apply more caution. We expect the government or anyone concerned to help us fix it.”
When contacted, Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sanwo-Olu, while expressing worry on how railings fixed on the bridge could have disappeared, described it as an act of vandalism.
He however noted that the Ministry of Works would visit the bridge to ascertain the damage and fix it.
“How can rails disappear? Probably some people have gone to tamper with the railings. I will inform the works department to go and check,” the CPS told PUNCH Metro in a telephone interview on Monday.
