This was disclosed in a statement from the Public Affairs Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Mrs Kadiri Folashade, on Monday.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised that business activities would resume at the popular spare parts market, following its recent closure due to various environmental violations.
The Commissioner highlighted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration places a high priority on maintaining a clean environment, ensuring public health, and promoting safety. This aligns with the THEMES Plus agenda, which drove the recent efforts to enforce strict compliance with waste management best practices in markets across the state.
Reacting to the news on Tuesday, Netizens have lauded the reopening of the market as businesses had been on a halt for the period of its closure.
An X user identified as Odirionyenfe Amandianeze wrote, “Finally ladipo market has been opened thanks be to Yahweh.”
Another user, Ebenezer Onomu, posted, “Great move.”
Nevertheless, another user, Achonye, lamented the poor sanitary condition of the market, stating that even with the reopening, the closure will amount to nothing because of poor sanitary. He said, “Unfortunately, nothing changes in those markets. The poor sanitary condition was never abated.”
However, in another development, some users have called on Sanwo-Olu and the police to investigate the reported shooting during the celebration of the reopening of the market on Tuesday.
In a video posted by a user, Lawrence Okoro, and monitored by Punch Online, an unidentified man was seen shooting a loaded gun into the air while jubilating with people around him. The video, as posted by Okoro had the caption, “Ladipo market reopens and a man seen shooting AK47 in celebration. This easily could have turned bloody.”
The police had yet to react to the call as of the time of filing this report.
