Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, is pleased to have ended the country’s four-year winless run in friendly games following his side’s 3-2 win over 10-man Mozambique on Monday but he was quick to express his displeasure at his players’ performance in the wake of the victory, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Peseiro blamed his side for losing concentration during the game and not being clinical in front of goal.
Genty Catamo scored the opener in the sixth minute after he ran in between the Eagles’ centre-backs to poke the ball into the net after goalkeeper Francis Uzoho wrongly anticipated the ball in a different direction.
The Mambas were pegged back in the 19th minute when Terem Moffi struck the equaliser.
Frank Onyeka shot the Eagles into the lead on the half-hour mark with a pile driver from the edge of the penalty box before Moses Simon scored from the penalty spot in additional time of the first half to make it 3-1 seven minutes after Edmilson Dove was sent off for pulling down Joe Aribo who was goal bound.
Despite their numerical advantage, Mozambique reduced the deficit in the 55th minute through Faisal Bangal – a goal that left Peseiro disappointed.
Speaking in a post-match interview, the Portuguese coach rued his side’s game management in the encounter.
“First of all, I’m happy that after 15 friendly matches, we finally got a win for the first time in four years,” Peseiro said.
“I think we deserved much more from this game (against Mozambique). It was easy playing against 10 men but when we were 3-1 up, I didn’t like the performance in the second half. We commanded the game but we lost concentration at some point. We played better than this result.
“We were better than this team (Mozambique). I think my players felt it was easy. I’m not happy with the performance of the players.
“We didn’t manage the game well we had too many poor passes, poor crosses and poor finishing which I don’t like.
“We should have scored more goals, we created so many chances to score say eight goals. We played better than this performance my players need to stay more concentration.”
