What Is the AFCON?
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the most prestigious football tournament in the African continent. The competition is organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and all 54 countries associated with CAF are eligible to participate. However, only 24 countries can make it to the tournament after a qualifying round is held among the 54 nations.
AFCON was first held in 1957 in Sudan, where three countries (Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia) participated. Egypt won the first-ever tournament and currently has 7 titles to their name, the most by any other country.
The competition is held every two years, and the 2023/24 AFCON set to be held in Ivory Coast will be the 34th edition. However, only 14 countries have claimed the title since its inception.
Stats of the Last AFCON
Before you place a bet on any of the AFCON games, it is a good idea to check the stats from the last edition of this competition. The 2021 AFCON was held in Cameroon as Senegal secured their first-ever AFCON triumph following a win over Egypt on penalties.
A total of 52 matches were played across the group stage, the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third place, and final. The tournament saw 100 goals, which gave an average of 1.92 goals per game. This stat could help your AFCON predictions, especially when wagering on over/under 2.5 goals.
Senegal’s Sadio Mane was crowned the competition’s best player, while Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar was the highest goalscorer with 8 goals. The best young player went to Burkina Faso’s Isaa Kabore, while Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy won the goalkeeper of the tournament. Senegal also received the Fair Play Award. These individual awards are some of the outright betting markets available on Nigerian sportsbooks that our readers may wager on.
