Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has heaped plaudits on Spartak Moscow forward Victor Moses, adding that he is the best player he ever played with at the national team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Both players also played together at Chelsea from 2012 to 2016.
Just a year on from his debut for Nigeria in 2012, the former England U-21 international became an African champion.
Despite battling injury throughout the tournament in South Africa, Moses scored twice against Ethiopia in the last group game to ensure Nigeria’s progress and in the semi-final against Mali the winger tormented the opposing defence. He was also named in the team of the tournament.
Mikel recounted the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament where Moses posted an outstanding performance that significantly led to the Eagles’ third African Cup of Nations Cup triumph in South Africa.
Speaking to Cafonline, Mikel highlighted Moses his immense contribution to Nigeria’s third AFCON trophy triumph.
“And the player that I played with, you know, I played with lots of great players. But then it will come down to when we actually won the tournament and one player that I really enjoyed his impact on the team then.
“Actually it was massive, was Victor Moses. Victor was really on his game when we won the Nations Cup. He played a massive role which helped us to win the tournament,”Mikel said.
As the Eagles prepare for the 2023 AFCON campaign in January, they aim to secure their fourth AFCON trophy. Their group-stage opponents include Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Ivory Coast and Mikel believes the Nigeria ar etop favorites.
Moving on to this tournament, we are always the favorite. There are many tough teams here, but, yeah, Nigeria is always the favorite,” he said.
