The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed this in a statement on Monday while announcing the fire evacuation drill for the year.
The drill, themed “Mitigating Fire Risk Through Fire Prevention,” she said would enlighten and raise awareness among the Lagos State Government workforce about fire prevention and protection.
The statement partly reads, “It’s important to note that the fire drill is an annual program that extends beyond the ministries, departments, and agencies.
“It is a grassroots fire prevention activity designed to expand the Fire Safety Net for the public, covering local governments, major markets, fuel depots, tanker terminals, sawmills, major motor parks, and public assemblies like religious worship centres and shopping malls.
“The agency received 1,327 fireballs,154 rescue calls, even about 9.728B worth of property saved while 1.62B estimated value of property lost between January 1 to October 29 this year, which signifies an increase in fire outbreak with the need to create more awareness.”
The fire drill exercise, according to the statement will be aired on three local radio stations; Traffic FM, Radio Lagos, and Naija FM, on Mondays and Wednesdays.
“This year’s fire safety and prevention exercise is focused on changing the misconception that the Agency is more reactive–Firefighting than proactive- Prevention, as the best fire is the one prevented.
“It will also focus on highlighting the role of informative, educative, and enlightening radio programs in communicating the Agency’s activities to the public.
“The radio program time includes, Mondays on Traffic FM, from 12:15-12:30 pm, Fire Service Calling(English); and Radio Lagos, “Ewu Ina'(Yoruba), from 6:20 – Wednesdays on Naija Fm from 9 am to 9.30 am, Fire Safety & You.
“These programs, among others, showcase the efforts of the Lagos State Government in reducing fire outbreaks and related emergencies which is crucial for safeguarding significant government investments in public order and safety,” the statement read.
