The Director, Economic Research and Policy Management, Federal Ministry of Finance, Grace Ogbonna, disclosed this while declaring open a three-day training programme for the ministry’s Batch 2 staff members in Abuja.
According to a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Stephen Kilebi, on Wednesday, the training was themed, ‘Service-Wide Financial Literacy in the Workplace programme on Financial Inclusion.’
According to her, financial inclusion has continued to gain attention globally because of the important role it plays in economic development and poverty alleviation.
She said the fact that a significant number of Nigeria’s public employees have poor knowledge of financial inclusion necessitated the ministry’s decision to launch an awareness campaign that would build the capacity of the public sector workforce on financial literacy.
She decried the fact that most of the employees in the public sector earn to consume due to a lack of financial literacy.
The director stated, “The focus is to empower workers and equip them to be financially savvy to make decisions and exercise discipline in managing their finances which would encourage a national saving habit, smart investment and planned retirement for workers in the public sector.”
She implored the participants to take advantage of the training very seriously, stressing that the training would add value to them, their families and their workplaces.
