A popular actor, Charles Awurum, has said that because of the roles they act in movies, comic actors are seen as fools by some of their fans.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, Awurum said, “Many people out there think that acting is easy, and is something they can easily do. But, when they come around and see what we go through, they know that it is not an easy task at all.
“Also, some people perceive and judge us by what they see on television. They think we are mumu (fools).
“In real life, they feel they can easily fool us, and get away with what they want. But, when they see that we are not fools, they have a rethink. Many people cannot separate actors from the roles they play. If one steals in a movie or TV show, people would say the person is a thief. If one is wicked on screen, they would conclude that one is wicked in real life.”
Awurum also recalled that the late comic actor, Sam Loco-Efe, was instrumental in his following his career path. He said, “Though he is dead, I never fail to acknowledge that Sam Loco-Efe inspired me. I was young when I watched him in a play during FESTAC 77. Since then, I wanted to become an actor, and by the grace of God, this is where I am now. Directors such as Teco Benson and Izu Chukwu have also contributed to my success along the way.”
