The state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, confirmed the development in an interview with The PUNCH in Jos on Tuesday.
Ashoms, however, said that the tenure of one of the transition chairmen, Samuel Umaru, was not among those renewed by the governor. He added that Umaru had been replaced by another person, Samuel Dala.
The Commissioner said, “Yes, the governor has approved the extension of the tenure of the transition committee chairmen of the LGA for another six months. It is only that of Jos North that was not extended.
“Their tenure extension was communicated to the state Assembly members and it was read on the floor of the Assembly today (Tuesday) by the Speaker during their plenary and it got the approval of the lawmakers accordingly.”
On why the governor replaced Umaru as the transition chairman for Jos North LGA, the commissioner said “He was a civil servant and he retired recently from the service. The transition committee chairman is an appointive position and anybody can be so appointed. So, another person from Jos North was simply allowed to step in that position.”
The PUNCH reports that the transition committee chairmen in the 17 LGAs were first appointed by Mutwang in June 2023, following the suspension of former elected council chairmen over allegations of financial irregularities.
