About 300 youths across the communities in Odiolowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area will take part in this year’s edition of its annual sports fiesta as parts of their annual end of the year activities, Sunday PUNCH reports.
Chairman of the LCDA, Rasak Ajala, made this known during a news conference which heralded lined up events for their 2023 end of the year activities as well as a stakeholders interactive session on the preparation of the LCDA’s budget for 2024, held at the council secretariat in Ilupeju.
Ajala stressed that plans were in progress for the second edition of the programme in line with his administration’s commitment to keep youth restiveness in check in the LCDA.
Like the first edition, the sports fiesta will feature football, basketball, table tennis among other indoor and outdoor sports while registration for the various events will be close soon for the competitions proper.
“It is globally acceptable that sports has the power to change the world, it has
power to inspire, the power to unite people, it speaks to the youth in a language they understand, it creates hope where there was once despair. This belief spurs us to do more in sports and youth development. Our government recognises the inherent talents in our youth and the need to provide the platforms for them to realize their dreams,” the chairman said.
He also promised that work will soon commence on the construction of befitting football pitches in the LCDA, noting that the 2024 budget will touch the lives of indigenes and residents of the communities in line with the line with the THEMES PLUS agenda of Lagos State as a catalyst towards economic recoveryand prosperity.
Other programmmes lined up for the 2023 end of the year activities include; provision of food stuff to the vulnerables, trade assistance programme to support petty traders, award of bursary to indigent tertiary students of Odiolwo/Ojuwoye LCDA, quiz and debate competition for all public schools in Odiolowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, skill acqusition programme among others.
