Former Akwa United coach Kennedy Boboye has vowed to turn the fortunes of Heartland football club around after taking over as the new coach of the Nigeria Premier Football League side on Wednesday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Boboye was announced as replacement for Christian Obi who couldn’t guide the Naze Millionaires to a win in their first nine games of the season. They have six draws and three defeats from those games.
“I am ready for the task. I had different thoughts when I was contacted initially because of the club’s position on the league table but with what I have seen on the ground I am certain we can pull through,” Boboye told Heartland FC Media.
“We need everyone to get to work. You are going to be seeing a new mentality in the team. The players have assured me there would be changes and I am excited to be here.”
The two-time NPFL winner (Plateau United in 2017 and Akwa United in 2021) takes over the Naze Millionaires six months after he completed his UEFA B license coaching course in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
While Heartland are the only side without a win in the NPFL this season, Boboye’s first task will be a blockbuster Oriental Derby tie against Enyimba in Owerri on Saturday.
Since leaving Akwa United in 2022, Boboye hasn’t worked with any NPFL team but was part of Nigeria’s U-23 team technical crew for their ill-fated bid to reach the 2024 Olympic games.
After nine matches this season, Heartland, who got promoted back into the topflight this season are currently bottom of the table with six points.
