In a proactive step towards fortifying the digital realm, SecureMedia, a Co-Creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB) project, hosted a comprehensive Digital Security and Advocacy Workshop in Yaba, Lagos as a catalyst for equipping journalists, media creators, right groups, and individuals with indispensable skills and knowledge, enabling them to navigate the intricate digital landscape with resilience and confidence.
Wuraola Taiwo, Project Manager, CCHub’s Digital Security, and Musa Sani, a cyber threat intelligence professional, on the second day of the intensive training delved into crucial aspects of access management and control in the digital age. Participants were treated to a comprehensive session covering the importance of Identity and Access Management (IAM), access control best practices, surveillance risks, and the repercussions of compromised access.
The training emphasised the growing threat landscape faced by journalists, with a spotlight on the increasing instances of sophisticated attacks, including spyware targeting journalists. Insights were shared on the alarming practice of doxing, shedding light on the critical need for self-protection in the face of such threats.
A significant segment of the training was dedicated to arming attendees with knowledge on safeguarding themselves through secure communications and anonymous file transfers. Encryption techniques were elucidated, showcasing their vital role in ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
Also, the session looks into content management and the identification of the best content management systems (CMS) for websites, emphasising platforms that prioritise security and ease of access control. Participants dove deeper into advanced methodologies, engaged in collaborative exercises, and explored innovative tools and best practices for securing media content.
The training concluded on a high note, marking the successful completion of an enriching and impactful program. Participants showcased their newfound expertise through a knowledge test. Among the standout performers, the winners emerged, exhibiting exceptional understanding and proficiency in secure online practices. Their efforts were duly recognised as they were awarded the invaluable SafeOnline guide, further equipping them to navigate the digital sphere safely and responsibly.
The closing day resonated with enthusiasm and determination as participants walked away equipped with actionable strategies to fortify their digital presence and protect sensitive information. The training’s impact was evident, fostering a sense of empowerment among attendees to navigate the evolving threats in the media landscape confidently. Participants expressed their appreciation for the practical insights and actionable measures shared, empowering them to bolster their security measures effectively.
