He explained that in the Nigerian Army, continuous training has helped to maintain discipline, physical fitness, and team spirit among the troops.
Speaking at the 2023 Brigade’s inter-unit sports competition on Friday, Onasanya said the method of training could evolve, adding that basic soldier qualities such as high moral initiative and physical fitness must be developed.
He said, “Training is an organised activity aimed at imparting instructions to improve the recipient’s performance or to help him attain a required level of skill.
“Training is a continuous process in the Nigerian Army and it brings out the best standard discipline, physical fitness, combat survivor, and team spirit among troops.
“In line with the rules of the Nigerian Army and the complexities of modern warfare, soldiers are required to perform efficiently, thus emphasizing the essential requirements for a higher standard of training.
“Although methods of training continue to evolve, basic soldier qualities such as high moral initiative and physical fitness must be developed. Rigorous physical fitness and mental toughness training are required to contribute effectively to the achievement of the Nigerian Army vision”
Speaking on why the competition was organised, he said it was to enhance the leadership qualities and team spirit among troops of the Presidential Guards Brigade.
He said, “To a very large extent, the aim of this competition, is to improve leadership, quality, organisational ability and develop the level of initiative and team spirit among Brigade troops.”
The PUNCH reports that the Guards Brigade Garrison came top in the competition, while 177 Guards Brigade Battalion and 176 Guards Brigade Battalion emerged second and third respectively.
