The presence of combined heavily armed security operatives, comprising the police and military patrolling strategic streets in Kano, the Kano State capital, on Saturday foiled the attempt by supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party to make good their earlier threat to protest the conflicting Appeal Court judgment.
When Sunday PUNCH observed that Kofar Na’isa vicinity, including Hallal playing field, among other areas where the was to hold, were deserted.
Heavily armed security operatives were deployed at strategic locations within the neighborhood to ward off any security threat or breach of the peace.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gumel, earlier called on residents to maintain calmness and avoid any unlawful gathering, protest or procession that might ignite violence.
He said a combined team of security operatives had been mobilised to strategic locations to ensure peace and order in the entire state.
Contacted, the spokesman for the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, maintained that the huge presence of security operatives compelled both APC and NNPP supporters to rescind their earlier plan to stage the planned strike.
As of the time of filing this report, a combined team of military personnel and the police were noticed patrolling the streets particularly in areas where the planned protest was scheduled to hold to ensure law and order.
