The Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association Makurdi Branch, Maimuna Ikwulono, has described the review of money paid to lawyers for their appearance in court as a good development.
The Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpamese, had issued a memo dated November 10, 2023, approving an upward review of appearance fees for lawyers in the state from N2,500 to N10,000
The adjustment, according to the Chief Judge, is to take effect from 1st January, 2024.
He said that the adjustment was to ensure fair compensation for legal practitioners in courts across the state.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH on the review, the NBA chairman, Makurdi branch, stated that the review was as a result of lawyers’ demand.
She said, “We are the one that requested for the upward review. The N2,500 has been on for many years and in line with the economic realities now, it’s not sustainable and the Chief Judge of the state graciously approved it.
“When you do a case in court as a lawyer and you are successful at the end of the case, a successful counsel will ask for a cost and the cost includes the cost of the appearance of the counsel,” Ikwulono said.
