As the world observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, voices rise in unison to address the pervasive challenges threatening the safety and dignity of women globally. In Nigeria, the call for action echoes louder than ever, urging societal change and solidarity to combat gender-based violence.
November 25th marks an emotional moment to reflect, act, and recommit to eradicating all forms of violence against women. In Nigeria, a nation with diverse cultural tapestries that stands at the crossroads of progress and entrenched societal norms that continue to undermine the safety and rights of its women.
The United Nations reports that globally, an estimated 736 million women—almost one in three—have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their lives. According to a 2019 survey by the Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics, 30% of Nigerian women aged 15 to 49 have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime. This staggering reality transcends physical abuse; it encompasses emotional, economic, and psychological violence, often perpetuated in different settings, including the workplace and online spaces, and most of the time, it is not reported.
Unravelling the underlying challenges reveals a complex web of systemic barriers. Cultural beliefs, economic disparities, and a lack of comprehensive legal frameworks present obstacles to ensuring justice and protection for women. The fear of stigma and retaliation often prevents survivors from seeking support or justice, perpetuating cycles of abuse.
Amidst these challenges, a rise in activism and advocacy emerges, led by resilient women and allies across Nigeria. Grassroots organisations, civil society groups, and individuals champion awareness campaigns, legal reforms, and support services, fostering spaces for survivors to heal and seek justice.
Empowerment emerges as a beacon of hope. Educating communities, enhancing access to healthcare and economic opportunities, and fostering a culture of respect and equality form the bedrock of sustainable change. Empowered women stand as catalysts for progress, reshaping narratives and demanding a world free from violence and fear.
Moving forward, on this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the clarion call resounds: it is imperative to join forces in dismantling the structures that perpetuate violence. From policy reforms to grassroots initiatives, every step towards creating safer spaces for women is a step towards a more just and equitable society.
As the sun sets on this day of commemoration, the resolve to eliminate violence against women burns brighter. In the corridors of power, within communities, and in our homes, let us pledge unwavering commitment to stand by and empower women. Only together can we script a future where every woman thrives in safety, dignity, and equality.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women marks the launch of the UNiTE campaign (November 25–December 10), an initiative of 16 days of activism concluding on the day that commemorates International Human Rights Day (10 December).
This 2023 campaign, “Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls,” calls on citizens to show how much they care about ending violence against women and girls and calls on governments worldwide to share how they are investing in gender-based violence prevention. Join the global movement with the #NoExcuse slogan, calling for urgent investments to prevent violence against women and girls.
