A London, United Kingdom-based singer, Estelle Lavaud, has said that her father introduced her to music at an early age by playing the songs of the late afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, and other musicians.
Reflecting on the root of her music career, Lavaud, who is British-Mauritian, told Sunday Scoop, “My dad introduced me to Fela Kuti’s music when I was in primary school. I loved the way his music made everyone feel liberated and warm.
“It always made me want to dance. I also remember loving the way his guitar was ‘funky’, and the percussion and brass would compliment it. His music had such a wholesome and authentic vibe.
“I started singing from the age of six, and I performed in competitions all over the UK. My mother also helped me to develop my talents. I feel so blessed.”
She stated that she featured Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks and Patoranking on her latest single, Roll on Me, because she had always wanted to work with them. She added that she had been their fan since they started making music respectively.
On other artistes she would like to work with, Lavaud said, “I would love to collaborate with Wizkid, Tems, Ayra Starr and Burna Boy. As far as I’m concerned, Wizkid is such a legend. There was a time I made a sample of his song, True Love, with my ukulele (a musical instrument) and I posted it on Instagram. He reposted the video, and made me know what he thought about it. That was a big deal for me.”
