The International Kravmaga Federation successfully hosted a seminar on anti-kidnapping and self defence on Saturday at the Yewande Memorial School in Surulere, Lagos State, Sunday PUNCH reports.
Director Africa region IKMF Adebola Otubushin revealed that there was need for individuals to embrace self defence skills to promote a disciplined society free from crime in Nigeria.
Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art developed for the Israel Defense Forces. It is derived from a combination of techniques used in aikido, judo, karate, boxing, and wrestling. It is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency.
“The current crime rate in Nigeria is possible due to the lack of self defence skills, if the society is well defended and prepared for attacks, crime rate will drop. Everyone needs to be protected and we are here to equip them with the skills to do the protection themselves so they can be cautious of their environment and be prepared for danger,” Otubushin said.
Trained in Krav Maga in Israel, the certified instructor revealed that the participants who took place at the seminar had access to the best instructors on offer and would benefit greatly.
“The surviving abduction seminar on defence against kidnapping is being trained by the top instructors across the world who will teach on techniques to defend themselves and protect themselves from all forms of dangers including kidnapping. This seminar is not only an educational initiative but also a proactive step towards ensuring the safety and security of individuals within our community,” Otubunshin added.
Former president Nigeria Taekwondo Federation president George Ashiru commended the programme, saying it was timely and very beneficial for the participants who need to learn more about everyday dangers.
“The opportunities that this seminar presents is boundless and I am glad we have such a good turnout. Situational awareness is very important, most people get into trouble because they are not aware of the dangers around them due to being stuck to their phones or blocking their ears with headphones which can lead to kidnapping. I believe everyone who has particpated at this event will not only learn but also be able to train others now,” Ashiru said.
Over 20 participants consisting of lecturers, workers and athletes took part in the seminar including Krav maga student Israel Mtumbuka who is also a deputy instructor and says the benefits of kravmaga are enormous.
