The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria on Monday said its investigative team and relevant Nigerian authorities are still probing the November 6 fire incident at its Abuja office, which claimed two lives and injured others.
The fire reportedly happened in the commission’s generator house due to a diesel explosion.
Following the incident, the commission suspended its operations except for the visa application centres which remained open in Abuja and Lagos.
The high commission later announced the arrival of its technical team in Nigeria to probe the incident.
A statement on November 14 by the Public Affairs staff of the commission, Demilade Kosemani, said, “Following an explosion in the generator room at the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria on November 6th that claimed two lives and left two others injured, a team of technical experts from Canada arrived in Abuja to conduct a formal investigation to determine the factors and conditions that led to the explosion.
“Efforts are being undertaken to coordinate the work of the Canadian investigation team with the relevant Nigerian authorities in line with their respective mandates.”
Weeks after the arrival of the team, The PUNCH sought an update on the probe.
In response to our correspondent’s inquiry, the commission’s spokesman, Kosemani, said, “The investigation by the Canadian investigation team to determine the cause of the incident is ongoing.
“The Canadian investigation team has been in contact with the relevant Nigerian authorities, and access to the site has been granted to these authorities to conduct their own investigations, in line with their respective mandates.”
