A resident of Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, Alhaji Ibrahim Orlu, staged a one-man protest to the headquarters of Rivers State Police Command, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt on Thursday.
Orlu was demanding the whereabouts and arrest of a suspect who allegedly killed and buried a day-old baby alive at the Eagle Island in August.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Orlu said, ‘You can remember that there was an incident where a day-old baby was allegedly buried alive on Eagle Island by some ‘Yahoo boys.’
“After five of us volunteered a statement at the State Criminal and Intelligence Department, up till now, we have not been informed of anything.”
He further said the Investigating Police Officer had informed them that the suspects (Yahoo boys) had been charged to court.
Orlu however queried, “Which court did he charge the boys to? He said Magistrate Court 10, and I ask, what are the details of the charge?
“What did you charge them for and what is the charge number? Up till date, they refused to feed me with that.”
Continuing, he said, “I went to the Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Court 10 and I was told such a case did not come to the court.
“I met the prosecutor, and the registrar of the court said they didn’t have knowledge of such a case. And I went back to the IPO, Mr Festus, to tell us where the case is. Give me details so they could trace the case file but he refused.
“Before now, I got information that they wanted to release the suspects on bail. That they were negotiating N5m and N3m to release the boys.”
He claimed that the IPO was not truthful, as he neither disclosed the court the case was taken nor the charge sheet number.
The protesting man added, “I want justice for the baby. The Commissioner of Police should reassign the matter, investigate it and let us know where the baby came from, the mother and how the baby was picked and killed
“There should have been an autopsy. When I asked the IPO, he said nobody gave him money for an autopsy, that is why he did not do autopsy.
“I asked him why he did not call the five of us who volunteered a statement. The dead body of the baby should be provided.
“We don’t know where the body of the baby is. We don’t know where the suspects are. The Commissioner of Police should revisit the case, to ascertain where the suspects are and the dead body of the baby.”
Orlu thereafter presented a petition to a senior police officer at the command, who in turn assured him that it would be transmitted to the CP, Olatunji Disu.
In August, the Port Harcourt City Local Government Security Watch and Azikiwe Police Division arrested 12 suspected Internet fraudsters popularly called ‘Yahoo Plus” for allegedly burying the newborn alive.
The suspects were transferred to the State CID in Port Harcourt by the Azikiwe Police Division in Mile 2, Diobu, Port Harcourt.
