26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), demonstrating their loyalty to Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a letter read aloud on the Assembly floor on Monday, the lawmakers—among them the factional Speaker, Rt. Hon. Matthew Amaewhule—announced their departure.
The defectors mentioned the PDP’s national leadership division as their reason for leaving the party in the letter, which was also written to the state’s acting PDP chairman and signed by all 26 lawmakers.
