Home side in control of their own destiny
It has been a good qualification campaign for Rennes. They now simply need to avoid defeat to advance directly to the last 16. However, as the visitors are a dangerous opponent, playing for the draw would be a risky strategy.
The hosts are the favourite to be the winner of this tie, but I am hesitant about backing a side that doesn’t need to win. Therefore, using the combined markets with Bet9ja, I am taking the safer option of Rennes or Draw Double Chance, combined with both teams to score.
With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Villarreal have to take an offensive approach. In 13 of their 16 La Liga matches this term, both teams have managed to score.

Entertainment to be the most likely outcome
This looks like a high-scoring game for all the above reasons. Each goal changes the tie’s dynamic, and a big incentive is securing a place directly in the last 16. The 1-0 result in the last head-to-head doesn’t concern me, as the game dynamic for this meeting is totally different.
Looking at the stats, four of Rennes’ five games in the competition so far have seen at least three goals, with their last home game seeing four. Only two of Villarreal’s Europa League games have seen three or more, but five of their last six domestic matches have crossed that line. There have been 23 goals in total at an average of 3.83.
The odds for over 2.5 goals in this game are too short to play, but I am comfortable choosing the Asian total of over 3. This means we need four or more goals to win. However, if the match ends with exactly three goals, we will receive a full refund of our stake.

Fab to make visitors Rieder it and weep
Fabian Rieder has made a good impact at Rennes since his switch from Young Boys in the summer. The 21-year-old scored his first goal for his new club in this competition on his first start. It took him just nine minutes to get on the scoresheet in the 3-1 defeat over Panathinaikos last month.
After his initial goal, the Swiss U21 international came off the bench against Maccabi Haifa and scored a superb free-kick in stoppage time. At odds of 5.50, it is worth adding Rieder to my tips to make it three goals in his Europa League appearances.

We could see pens in Rennes
There have been three penalties awarded in Rennes’ games so far, all in their two ties with Panathinaikos. Although Villarreal have yet to see one given in their five Europa League games, there have been five in their La Liga fixtures so far this season.
However, the main draw to adding this to my predictions is referee Atilla Karaoglan. The Turkish official awarded three spot kicks in the Besiktas vs Fenerbahce clash at the weekend. He had also given one in the previous match he officiated, Union St. Gilloise vs LASK in this competition.
