Stroke Care International, a leading organisation dedicated to stroke awareness and support, has made a significant strides in raising awareness in Ojota community, Lagos, with free lecture on strokes, symptoms, free medical checkup, drugs, and consultation.
The initiative is spearheaded by Mrs. Gloria Ekeng, an esteemed consultant and a specialist in stroke care and a key member of the World Stroke Organisation, is aimed at educating and empowering locals about stroke prevention, recognition of symptoms, and the importance of timely medical intervention.
The programme held today, Thursday, December 14, 2023, in various community venues such as markets, religious centres, and public spaces, focused on dispelling misconceptions surrounding stroke.
Mrs. Ekeng emphasized the urgency of seeking immediate medical help when stroke symptoms manifest, reiterating the need for swift action.
One of the primary goals was to break the myth that stroke is as a result of someone’s wrongdoing or ill-wishing. The campaign explained that stroke is a medical emergency requiring urgent professional assistance rather than resorting to traditional or spiritual remedies.
In a touching testimony, Mrs. Ekeng recounted the moving success story of a young lady in her 30s who survived a severe stroke, emphasising the challenges faced and the significant progress made with the support of the organization.
This narrative reenforced the urgency and importance of access to medication, rehabilitation, and ongoing care for stroke survivors.
It was learnt that the programme’s success is attributed to the unwavering commitment of volunteers, who selflessly contributed their time and efforts to spread awareness without remuneration.
While celebrating the impactful strides made in the Ojota community, Stroke Care International underscored the need for continued support, both financial and through information sharing, to sustain and expand such crucial awareness programmes across Nigeria.
The organisation observed that lack of social support and exorbitant costs associated with stroke therapy are the bane, stressing the importance of collective efforts to provide rehabilitation and aid to survivors.
However, Stroke Care International has reaffirmed its dedication to advocacy for survivors, and reiterated its commitment to conducting more awareness programmes that would garner global support to bolster their efforts.
Ojota community awareness campaign would continue to serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the necessity for ongoing support to combat the challenges posed by stroke in Nigeria.
