Alpha Beach, located in the heart of Lekki, Lagos, witnessed a profound event initiated by the Sterling One Foundation in collaboration with several partners, marking a significant stride in environmental conservation efforts within Nigeria.
In a National Clean-Up Day on Saturday, 16th December, 2023, it was aimed to tackle the pervasive issue of plastic pollution and foster a culture of responsible waste management.
Addressing a gathering that included staffs of Sterling Bank, passionate volunteers and media representatives from diverse online news platforms, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sterling One Foundation, Mrs. Olapeju Ibekwe, emphasised the critical role of responsible waste management.
She reiterated the foundation’s dedication to renewable energy initiatives and its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability dating back to 2007.
“The efforts made today are not merely about tidying up our immediate surroundings but about safeguarding our own well-being and that of future generations,” she added.
Mrs. Ibekwe underscored the interconnectedness between environmental conservation and individual well-being. Drawing attention to alarming statistics predicting increased plastic pollution in oceans by 2050, the message resonated deeply, highlighting the urgent need for concerted action.
The event aimed not only at cleaning the beach but also served as a platform to raise awareness and educate Nigerians on proper waste management practices.
‘The nationwide exercise, in 27 locations, included Lagos and the six geo-political zones of the country, although the last for 2023, marks the beginning of an ongoing movement.
During the event, staffs, partners and volunteers of the foundation carried out the exercise simultaneously across the locations nationwide.
“The Foundation’s unwavering commitment and ambition foresee more such impactful initiatives in the future, spreading awareness and effecting tangible change nationwide”, she said.
Speaking at Alpha Beach, the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by the Special Adviser, Mr. Olamidosu Rotimi-Akodu, echoed the sentiment of unity in tackling environmental challenges.
Despite acknowledging the existing challenges, he expressed a desire for continuous collaboration with diverse organisations, envisioning regular cleanups across the state to effectively address environmental concerns.
“We remain resolute in our ambition to transform Lagos State into a plastic-free environment,” he added.
The National Cleanup at Alpha Beach showcased the commitment of Sterling Bank, a key funding partner, whose continued support enabled the realisation of this impactful initiative.
The collaborative effort between various organisations and stakeholders underscored a collective resolve to combat environmental degradation and foster a cleaner, healthier habitat in Lagos and beyond.
