Team Selection Process
The AFCON qualification phase took place between March 23, 2022, and October 17, 2023, to determine the football teams that would make the finals in Ivory Coast. 48 teams were initially placed into Groups A – L to participate in the qualifiers.
CAF reduced it to 46 teams as Kenya and Zimbabwe were disqualified after FIFA failed to lift their suspension from all international football activities. As a result, two groups had to settle with 3 teams while the rest had 4 each.
According to CAF, only the two highest-placed teams in each group would qualify. For the groups with 3 football teams, only 1 could go through.
The qualifiers met expectations, while we also experienced a few surprises. One of the best performances witnessed was from the Cape Verde team. They’ve only made the AFCON finals 3 times and didn’t seem a threat in a group with Burkina Faso, Togo and Eswatini. Surprisingly, they finished second in Group B, a point below the first-placed team Burkina Faso.
Equatorial Guinea were also brilliant, finishing joint top with Tunisia in Group J. Not so many would have predicted them to make it through in a group with Botswana and Libya. However, they proved everyone wrong and only lost a game during the qualifiers. Seeing their performances against Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau in Group A of the AFCON finals will be one to look forward to.
