The National Open University of Nigeria has denied that its invigilators deprived a female student who appeared in a viral video on the internet access to write exams.
A video trended online on Friday where a student of the university at the Garki Study Centre, Cassandra Michael, was denied entry into the examination hall over indecent dressing.
In the video, she alleged that an invigilator told her she wouldn’t write her exam for not dressing appropriately.
She said, “This morning, I came to school because I had a paper around 2pm and one of the invigilators said I wasn’t going to write my exam because of my dressing.
“He said that I dressed improperly. I’m still on the school premises and I’m going to show everyone what I’m putting on if this is improper. Please, tell me in the comment section and if it is not improper, you guys should help me share this video, it has to get to whoever owns the school because what they are doing to us is not fair.”
Cassandra alleged that students were being poorly treated and that many decided to be silent about it, but she wasn’t going to be silent.
She noted, “What they are doing to us, some people cannot come out today, but I’m going to say it because I know my rights and that’s why I’m here.”
She was seen in the video wearing a top, which was tucked into pant trousers and a jean jacket worn on it.
Contacted by our correspondent, Director, Directorate of Examinations and Assessment, NOUN, Professor Olugbenga Ojo, noted that the viral video was a premeditated and planned uproar by the student.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, he said, “To me, it is premeditated. From what I heard at the centre, her friend who came for an exam earlier in the day was improperly dressed and was asked to go and change, which she did, and nothing happened. When it was her turn, she wanted to cause a scene. Afterwards, she was asked to go inside, but she refused.
“The student could have come to report that incident to my office and one would have looked into it. If you look at what she was saying, it is a deliberate thing. I was told that the staff working at the centre spoke to her to go in and she refused, it is a deliberate thing.”
