Residents of Amagba community, Benin, the Edo State capital, were excited and grateful to the Benin branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers for donating solar street lights spanning a distance of 420 metres on Emwinmadomwan Street.
The Chairman of NSE Benin, Engr. Evukowhiroro Ojegba, told South-South PUNCH that the project was delivered by the Engineering Programme Committee of the NSE on December 23, to help light up the street/community as a way of giving back to the community.
The NSE Benin boss thanked everyone who made the project a reality, reiterating his commitment to the development of communities by embarking on laudable engineering programmes that would add values to the lives of the people, promising to extend the gesture to other communities in the state.
He said, “I am happy to see that this project has come to fruition. It is a project that is important to us, as it helps light up the community and add value to the people’s lives as well as enhance security.
“What is key is that the light are maintained so that they can serve the community for a long time. I will also urge the people to protect the lights and ensure it is not vandalized.”
Chairman, Community Engineering Programme Committee of the NSE Benin, Engr. Oby Obeta, thanked the NSE chairman for putting the body in the limelight through the various community projects it had embarked on.
She noted that programmes like this were life-changing and helps the people in their daily activities. She also called on the residents to ensure that the lights were put into good use and guide against vandalisation.
Obeta also thanked the management of Exploration Plant Limited for sponsoring the project, even as she further sought partnership with other corporate bodies.
The high point of the event was the commissioning of the project by the past chairman of NSE Benin, who is also the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Engr Dr. Victor Obanor.
Obanor thereafter, handed over the 420-metre solar, photo luminescent, motion detector, remote control, street light support apparatus to the street head, with an instruction to safe guard, protect, maintain and utilize it.
In response, the street head, Mike Enobakhare, thanked the NSE for the gesture, stating that the project would brighten the locality and add value to the security of the area.
