The Lagos State Building Control Agency has condemned the increasing attacks on its enforcement officers when carrying out their official duties.
According to LASBCA’s General Manager, Mr Gbolahan Oki, some officials of the agency were recently attacked while on a routine monitoring exercise around Musical Village, Awolowo Road, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
Oki said the officials were attacked with charms and weapons and held hostage for hours.
However, he said no amount of intimidation or harassment would deter LASBCA from carrying out its mandate to ensure safe and secure buildings across the state.
“These assailants not only obstructed our staff but also held them hostage for hours. (But) these acts of hooliganism will not deter us from carrying out our duties.
“Thankfully, we managed to overcome these attacks without any casualties. Our staff’s resilience and quick responses have played a crucial role in overpowering the assailants and preventing more severe consequences. These are the kinds of challenges we face daily in our bid to ensure that buildings in the state are safe and fit for habilitation,” Oki said in a statement on Thursday.
The LASBCA GM called on the public to understand and support the agency in its mission to curb the menace of building collapses across the state, noting that incidents of harassment and attacks tended to jeopardise the agency’s monitoring activities and could potentially pose significant threats to the public.
