“It is welcoming that the last elections in DR Congo were well-concluded. Democracy is sustainable on the continent. I congratulate President Tshisekedi on his victory,” Tinubu said in a congratulatory statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
The statement is titled, ‘President Tinubu congratulates president Felix Tshisekedi of DR congo on re-election.’
On December 31, 2023, Congo’s electoral commission announced the incumbent President, Tshisekedi, as provisional winner of the election having garnered 73 per cent of the votes amounting to 13, 215,366.
Tshisekedi ran against two candidates in what became the first in the fourth election cycle in accordance with the 2006 constitution.
They include the first runner-up, Moïse Katumbi of the Ensemble party, a businessman, who polled 18.08 per cent (3,258,538) of the votes and Martine Fayulu of the ECiDé party, who polled 5.33 per cent (960,478).
According to Ngelale, “President Tinubu commend the government and the people of DR Congo for ensuring a successful conduct of the last elections.”
The President also congratulated the people of DR Congo for deepening democratic norms by exercising their rights without resorting to acts inimical to the sustenance of democracy.
Tinubu said Tshisekedi has “demonstrated statesmanship in his handling of regional and continental matters. Africa will overcome any challenge with governance by popular consent, and democracy will thrive.”
Therefore, he wished Tshisekedi a successful term in office as he prepared to be sworn in on January 20.
