It was learnt that their decision to suspend the strike was reached on Sunday during a meeting with the 17 Local Government chairmen in the state and the representatives of labour unions, which was held in Jos, the state capital, Sunday.
The state Secretary of the Nigerian Union Teachers, Marshall Dachung, who announced the suspension of the planned strike after the meeting, said.
In pursuance of the implementation of the hitherto signed agreement between the 17 Local Government Council Chairmen of Plateau State and The Plateau State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (IPSNC), NLC and TUC in respect of NULGE, NUT, NANNM, NASU, and MHWUN signed on the 5th July 2023, and prompted by NUT’s notice of Industrial Action scheduled to commence on the 08/01/2024, a meeting was held between the two parties-The 17 Local Government Council Chairmen and the Labour representatives,where-in the following resolutions were reached,
“That one-month salary arrears be paid along with January 2024 salary for Local Governments Councils.
“That during the Personnel Audit exercise, staff due for promotion and have received their promotion letters would be captured on their current promotion status and have their arrears paid to deserving workers after the Audit exercise. The promotion is to be implemented by January 2024. Salary:
“That the promotion of junior staff of non-professional teachers should be fast-tracked and released for immediate capture during the personnel audit exercise and subsequent implementation.
“That the Personnel Audit will involve all the industrial unions in the Local Government Councils simultaneously with effect from Monday 15th January 2024 and to be completed within 21 days.
“That Labour Representatives will take part in the Personnel Audit exercise.
“That other staff on GL 15 and 16 not enjoying domestic servant allowance shall have theirs implemented along with January 2024 salary.
“Meeting commended the Chairmen of Local Government Councils that are up-to-date in the payment of Staff salaries and emolument.
“The meeting also applauds the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for being Workers-friendly and directing councils with arrears to endeavour to pay another month between now and the end of January 2024.
“And that by virtue of the resolution so reached by the two parties, NUT hereby suspend the earlier strike notice issued with effect from today, Sunday, the 7th Day of January 2024.”
