The Lagos State Government has called on residents of the state to be cautious and make conscious choices as data reveals moderate and unhealthy Air Quality Index in some parts of the state.
According to the American Lung Association, the Air Quality Index is the system used to warn the public when air pollution is dangerous.
The AQI tracks ozone (smog) and particle pollution (tiny particles from smoke, power plants and factories, vehicle exhaust, and other sources), as well as four other widespread air pollutants.
Data released on Thursday by AirQo Africa revealed that parts of Lagos State, including Lagos Port, Apapa; Ita Elewa, Ikorodu; LASEPA, Ikeja; Oshodi; Ikeja General Hospital Road; UNILAG Research Lab; LSDPC Estate, Ebute Metta; Egbeda and Ikotun had a moderate air quality index, which is said to be fair but might affect sensitive individuals.
Areas such as Shobayo Close, Araromi; NiMet, Oshodi; Banana Island; NIMR Yaba; Mushin; Mende; Surulere; UNILAG Main Gate and Lagos Island Health Centre had air quality index said to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, active adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma.
LAMATA Ketu; Iba Town, Ojo; Agege and Akoka had unhealthy air quality index. This, according to the report, may lead to health issues for everyone in the area with sensitive groups being susceptible to severe health issues.
In reference to the data, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency said, “It is important we make conscious choices for a cleaner and healthier city. Together, we can breathe easier.”
