The hype man for Nigerian music superstar Davido, Special Spesh, has expressed his frustration and disappointment following Davido’s loss to Tyla in a category they were both nominated for at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Taking to Instagram to voice his dissatisfaction, he expressed his sentiments regarding Davido’s failure to secure any wins in the three categories he was nominated for.
In his post, he made a bold statement, claiming that they would not allow anyone to diminish the essence of Afrobeats, Afro Fusion, or any other African music genre.
He emphasized that the influence and success of African music were becoming undeniable, and he wrote on the tendency of external forces to try to gain control once something becomes popular.
He wrote: “We won’t give you the power to dumb Afrobeats down or Afro Fusion or anything African.
“That’s “(white) America’s problem!! When things start to take over and get massive, they always want a part, then try to have a say, then try to control!!!”
Special Spesh used the hashtag:
“Gbedu about squ*rting don win” in reference to the explicit lyrics in Tyla’s Grammy-winning song “Water.”
Tyla’s victory in the Best African Music Performance category meant that her track surpassed notable contenders such as Davido’s “Unavailable,” Burna Boy’s “City Boys,” Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” and Asake’s “Amapiano.”
The 2024 Grammy results have sparked debates online, among fans, netizens and industry insiders alike, fueling discussions about African music on the global stage.
