The Rano Kibiya Bunkure Community Development Association in Kano State has called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf not to listen to those calling for the dissolution of the new emirates in the state.
The spokesperson for the community, Wali Rano, made the call while addressing a news conference on behalf of the Rano Emirate in Kano on Wednesday.
He said the call was necessary because sustaining the new emirates had the aspiration of the vast majority of their area.
The call came days after the Kano State House of Assembly received a letter from a group demanding the dissolution of the four additional emirates created by the immediate-past Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
According to the community, sustaining the emirates is not by any means meant to despise the Kano Emirate or any personality as perceived by some narrow-minded elements
“The upgrading of traditional rulers is not something new in Nigeria. The promotion of village heads to district heads or district heads to emirs has been continuous right from the Fulani Jihad to the present day,” Rano said.
He said the hitherto existing emirates as well as the upgrading of districts to emirates should not be viewed with negative political connotation rather it should be seen as a deliberate and conscious effort to restore and preserve traditional and political to its historic place.
“On account of Rano in particular, Rano has existed as an autonomous kingdom and ruled by several kings of Kwararrafa and Habe.
“In fact, Rano like Kano was one of the famous seven Hausa states founded by the legendary Bagauda. Even Fulani Jihad didn’t deprive Rano of its continuous existence as an independent kingdom,” he added.
