A statement by the Oluwo, signed by his Press Secretary, Alli Ibraheem, obtained in Osogbo on Saturday, said the first rain of the year experienced in the town was accompanied by a storm, which destroyed privately owned properties and damaged schools, electric poles, shops and some other public assets in Iwo.
Commiserating with the victims, Oba Akanbi called on the authority of NEMA, the Federal and State governments to come to the aid of affected people.
He described the damage done by the storm as monumental as “about forty electric poles were reportedly destroyed, thus interrupting electricity supply to Iwo, the development that has grossly hampered economic activities in the town.”
It further read in parts, “St. Mary Grammar School, Iwo has the roof of about 10 classrooms completely removed by the storm. I commiserate with my people who had their properties damaged by the rainstorm heralding the new season. I’m worried about the monumental destruction of the public and private properties in Iwo.
“I appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency for their intervention. About forty concrete electric poles were broken. St. Mary Grammar School, Iwo had the roofs of 10 classrooms removed, Oluwo Central Mosque roof and Iwo Customary Court roof, were also affected. Hundreds were rendered homeless, and shops and goods inside were destroyed.”
