Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps on Monday dislodged “miscreants” occupying pedestrian bridges in the state.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the update on his X handle on Monday.
Wahab stated that the officials dislodged miscreants squatting on pedestrian bridges in the Oshodi area of the state to make the bridge safe for pedestrians.
He said, “In order to make the pedestrian bridges across Lagos safe for pedestrians, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, this morning, resumed clearing of miscreants squatting on Oshodi pedestrian bridges.”
The PUNCH reports that the state government on Saturday also began the clean-up of shanties occupied by squatters under the Obalende Bridge in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state. This was upon the expiration of a four-day ultimatum issued to the occupants last week.
The government warned that hardship was not an excuse for people to occupy spaces under bridges or other public spaces.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, said this when asked what alternatives the government had in place for persons who might cite poverty to trade or sleep under the bridges.
“That is a general question, but the living standard of the people should not be a reason why you turn public space into your home,” he said.
