An eyewitness who spoke with PUNCH Online on condition of anonymity on Wednesday disclosed that the accident occurred when the vehicle skidded off the road after a downpour.
The vehicle, a Mitsubishi Canter with number plate AAB 172 XC, was conveying 10 persons and was said to be on high speed when the incident occurred.
It was gathered further that the dead victim fell off the back of the vehicle which led to his death.
The source said, “The accident occurred around PMB Estate along the road. The vehicle was on high speed when it occurred and I think it skidded off the road due to the rain that fell which caused the road to be wet.
“One of the occupants of the vehicle fell off from the back of the vehicle which led to his death. The police and the TRACE official were at the scene to assist the injured victims.”
When contacted for a reaction on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Bolaji Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, stressing that the injured persons were taken to the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba and State Hospital, Ijaiye, both in Abeokuta.
He said, “I can confirm that the accident happened. Reports showed that the cause of the crash was excess speed. Ten persons were involved, including seven males and three females. One of the male victims died in the crash while nine others were injured.
“The injured persons were taken to FMC, IIdi-Aba and State Hospital, Ijaiye, while the dead victim was deposited at the morgue of FMC.”
PUNCH Metro reported on Tuesday that nine people died while seven others were injured in an early morning crash that occurred on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway at the Kere bridge in the Ewekoro LGA, Ogun State.
The crash involved a truck and a Mazda bus with the number plate SMK 808 YD.
The accident, blamed on excessive speed and route violation reportedly caused an head-on collision between the truck and the Mazda bus.
The spookesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Florence Okpe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.
