The funeral activities of the late Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, continued on Thursday with a service of songs held at St. Andrew’s Cathedral Anglican Church, Imola, Owo, his hometown.
Akeredolu died on December 27, 2023, in Germany following a protracted battle with prostate cancer.
At the Thursday event, the younger brother of the late governor, Prof. Wole Akeredolu, said the family took consolidation in the outpouring of tributes for the deceased.
He said the outpouring of tributes was a testimony to the fact that the late Akeredolu lived a life of significance and made a positive impact on society.
He expressed the family’s gratitude to the people for their support and love for the late governor.
The Bishop of Anglican of Owo Diocese, Ondo State, Stephen Fagbemi, said the late Akeredolu was “not only a governor but also a visionary leader who was passionate about the things of God. “
The bishop said the late governor left a void that would be difficult to fill in the diocese, the state, and the nation at large. He prayed to God to grant the family the strength to bear the loss.
Similarly, in his brief words of exhortation, the Anglican Bishop of Akure Diocese and Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province, Simeon Borokini, said Akeredolu served the people of the state well, urging everyone to always do good in whatever position he or she occupied.
Some of the dignitaries at the service of songs were Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Deputy Governor Adelami Olayide; Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Joel Oyibo; Minister of State for Youth Development, Olawande Ayodele; Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Hellen Ogunwumiju; among others.
The burial program continues today (Friday) as the late former Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum will be laid to rest at the burial site in Owo.
Prior to the interment, a funeral service would be held at same St. Andrews Church, while the reception of guests follows.
